Be Led By Conviction, Not By Guilt (3)

Word Feast: Daily Menu from KCIC

II Corinthians 7:10 - "For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death."

The word conviction is mainly a legal term, referring to sentencing a criminal offence, thus it tends to carry more of a negative connotation. However, conviction explains the realization of wrong or error that a person gets when they have transgressed God's law. Although it is a weighty emotion, the Lord would have the outcome of our conviction to lead us to repentance.

The Bible in its entirety is full of rules, laws and principles which are perfect, right and pure (Psa 19:7-11), that we are to follow to live how God has intended. 2 Tim 3:16 says, "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." Hence, as believers, we should give ourselves to be doers of what the Bible says, not just hearers only (Jam 1:22).

When we develop intimacy with the Holy Spirit through fellowship with the Word and prayers, we recognise more quickly when we have erred. The Holy Spirit in us creates a consciousness of our righteousness in Christ Jesus (2 Cor 5:21; John 16:10), and primes us of behaviours, attitudes or actions that are inconsistent with the nature of God in us.

Apostle describes conviction as "godly sorrow" in the reference scripture and outlines what it will look like, "‭such earnestness... such indignation, such alarm... and such a readiness to punish wrong. You showed that you have done everything necessary to make things right." (2 Cor 7:11, NLT). In times of conviction, we are reminded there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Rom 8:1).

Prayer: Father I thank you for setting me free from guilt and shame. Help me to delight in the laws of Your Word, and may my conviction always produce more godliness as a fruit in Jesus' name. Amen
