Deuteronomy 9:6 - “Therefore understand that the LORD your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people."
God is a gracious God. It is His nature to be gracious. Infact, He is exceedingly gracious. Even under the law, He couldn't help but be gracious; how much more in the dispensation of Grace which we are in! Grace is defined as God’s favor toward the unworthy or His benevolence on the undeserving. God is grace, just as He is love. In fact, He is the personification of love, truth, mercy, grace and faithfulness.
The Bible tells us that, "If we are faithless, He remains faithful [true to His word and His righteous character], for He cannot deny Himself" (2 Tim. 2:13). Even though God gave the Israelites the law, which was meant to be the working or contractual document guiding His relationship with them; He was still merciful in His dealings with them.
Our anchor scripture established that it was not the righteousness of the Israelites (adherence to the law of Moses) that made God give them "a land flowing with milk and honey". They were a rebellious and incredibly annoying people, but God was exceedingly gracious unto them. They were the very same people given the law, upon which their blessings depended on their obedience; yet God blessed them when they didn't deserve it. Does He not do the same to us?
Furthermore, David who was also under the law, enjoyed the manifold grace of God because God referred to him as "a man after my own heart" despite his many flaws. Having encountered God's abundant grace, David extolled God as gracious, righteous, full of compassion, slow to anger, and of great mercy (Psa. 116:5, 145:8). Beloved, stay conscious of God's abundant provisions of grace; and be thankful for it always!
Prayer: Father, I thank you for being exceedingly gracious to me. I declare that I see and enjoy your goodness, mercy and grace every day of my life in Jesus' Name.
