No Substitute For Obedience

Saturday October 28, 2023

1 Samuel 15:3 - “Now go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’ ”

When the Lord deals with certain things in our lives, it is not for us to decide what goes and remains. If He has spoken, we should as good children obey. In the case of God's instruction to Saul through Samuel in our anchor scripture, he was commanded to get rid of everything related to the Amalekites.

This was because of what Amalek did to Israel when they came out of Egypt. Deuteronomy 25:17-19 says; “Remember what Amalek did to you on the way as you were coming out of Egypt, how he met you on the way and attacked your rear ranks, all the stragglers at your rear, when you were tired and weary; and he did not fear God. Therefore it shall be, when the LORD your God has given you rest from your enemies all around, in the land which the LORD your God is giving you to possess as an inheritance, that you will blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven. You shall not forget.”

However, Saul and the people made a decision that the things they deemed worthless and despised were to be destroyed, but the best of the animals could be kept for sacrifice. Although throughout scripture we see that God delighted in sacrifices going up as a sweet aroma (Exodus 29:18), He values obedience even more (1 Samuel 15:22). Saul also spared King Agag of Amalek (1 Samuel 15:9). These decisions had dire consequences; for Saul, God rejected him as king.

There is no substitute for doing what God said to do. Since He knows the end from the beginning, His instructions are for your own good. So when He prompts you to do away with certain things in your life, it is for your benefit, both for now and the future, as some of your decisions may not only affect you but also affect generations to come. Surrender to Him as Lord, and let your desire be; “…not My will, but Yours, be done.” Luke 22:42.

Prayer: Lord, forgive me for where I've held on to things that You've told me to get rid of. I repent and rededicate my trust in You. I lay everything down today, and I choose to be obedient to Your leading of my life, in Jesus' name, Amen.
