Mark 9:24 - "Immediately, the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”"
Jesus did not perform many miracles in His home town because of the unbelief of His kinsmen (Matt 13:58). This is because unbelief limits the expression of faith and hinders people from experiencing the power of God. Referring to the Israelites that came out of Egypt, Hebrews 3:19 says, "So we see that they could not enter into (God's rest) because of unbelief."
In the account of the boy with the dumb spirit that the disciples of Jesus could not cast out (Read Mark 9: 17-29); Jesus told them that it was because of unbelief they couldn't cast out the demon. The disciples had faith, they had cast out demons previously; however, they also had unbelief in their hearts, and on this particular occasion, the unbelief made their faith unproductive.
So, how do we deal with unbelief? The reference scripture shows us one way: prayer! This is what the father of the child that had the dumb spirit did. He cried to Jesus in tears saying, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24). Another way is by studying God's word, believing it as true, meditating on it and confessing it over our lives and circumstances.
Moreover, you need to watch what you hear. Just as faith comes by hearing (Rom 10:17), unbelief is also strengthened by what you hear. So, keep hearing the Word of God and let the Word dwell in you richly (Col 3:16) rather than listening to words that feed unbelief. When we do this consistently, we energize our faith and suppress unbelief until it's ridden from our hearts.
Prayer: Lord, I believe You and I believe your Word. Deliver me from unbelief. Help me to guard my heart jealously against unbelief and let my faith produce results in Jesus' name. Amen.
