1 Corinthians 9:25-27 (NLT) - “All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.”
One fundamental truth about running the Christian race or living the Christian life is about the accepting of the Lordship of Christ. Luke 6:46 says; “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?” As a Christian, Jesus Christ is your Lord and Master. This means He has the final say over every area of your life.
So, to run your race successfully as His child, you must be given to doing what He says to do. It is about disciplining your body - “your natural / self desires” - to do what He (the Lord) wants when both are contradictory. Jesus Himself had to do this when He prayed; “saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” Luke 22:42.
So, like the Apostle Paul says in our anchor scripture about the athlete who disciplines his body so as to win the prize; be committed to disciplining your appetites, desires and affections to align with what the Master requires. And as a child of God, trust that God will always supply you with strength and capacity to carry out His Will, “for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” Philippians 2:13. He has helped others like the apostles, as seen in the scriptures, to finish their races well; trust that you will also win by His help (read 2 Tim. 4:7-8).
Prayer: Dear Father, I trust that You are able to keep me from falling and to help me win my race. My heart is yielded to You as You work in me both to desire and to do Your good pleasure, in Jesus’ Name. Amen
