Matthew 26: 41 - Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. Temptations is part and parcel of a Christian's experience on the faith journey to heaven. It is aimed at derailing you and stopping you from reaching your goal i.e. God's glorious plan and destiny for you here on earth, and heaven, your eternal destination. The enemy never wants you to achieve these. Apostle Paul says you need self discipline and the readiness and determination to fight in order to fulfil your heavenly ordained goals; and to overcome the temptations thrown at you. He asked, "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize" (1 Corin. 9:24). You're in a race and there's a price to win, and you can only win when you arrive safely at the destination. Satan's goal is to stop you from arriving at that destination. So, he'll throw everything possible and all sorts at you - darts, javelin, arrows etc - just to stop you. But you must be determined and say to yourself, "I'm unstoppable!" Remember that he prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. But you must resist him steadfastly and stand firm in the faith to the end (1 Peter 5:8-9). To win the crown that lasts forever, according to Apostle Paul; you need strict training, don't run aimlessly or fight like a shadow boxer, and do all it takes to tame your flesh and subdue it always (read 1 Corin.9:25-27). At the greatest hour of temptation for himself and his followers, Jesus instructed them to watch and pray so they don't enter (fall, stumble, derail) into temptation. Note that there are two things they must do: 'watch' and 'pray'. Both are equally important and you can't do one and leave the other. For example, prayer is useless when you're careless and become a prey to the devil. To watch means to be alert, observant, sensitive, careful, discerning, and sober. It means to not be ignorant of Satan's devices, lest he takes advantage of you (2 Corin.2:11). Adam and Eve were careless and not discerning, so the devil appeared like an angel of light and took advantage of their hidden desire and lust after the fruit. He also exploited their half baked knowledge of God’s word to derail them out of God's plans for them and mankind. So, don't be careless, but be watchful and pray so you don't enter into temptation (Matt. 26: 41). Prayers: I am determined Lord, to run my race with focus and win the crown. Please help me and give me the grace to be alert and watchful always so the enemy doesn't take advantage of me. I subdue my flesh and receive the strength and leading of the Spirit so I can overcome any temptation that comes my way. In Jesus name. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Feel free to share this devotional.
