Galatians 6:10 - “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.”
Jesus spoke of love as the quality that would mark His disciples out when He said; “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:35. Loving other people is indeed a command and as His child you should be ready to show that love which includes being affectionate or benevolent not only in words but also in action. 1 John 3:18 notes; “My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.”
To love however is beyond just actions. Studying 1 Corinthians 13, you will notice that love could also be considered as motive; why you are doing what you do. Take for instance 1 Corinthians 13:3; “And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.” Naturally speaking, if someone gave all their possessions to the poor, it can be easy to conclude that they love those they have given to but this is not the conclusion from God’s perspective according to this verse. So what motivates or inspires your action should also be love for them in your heart.
Love people genuinely. Don’t just treat people nicely because you think you have something to gain from them. Every human person regardless of social or economic status is valuable in God’s sight. In fact, the intrinsic value of every human being is the same in God’s sight. So, let God’s love for people be your motivation in your dealings with people. The Apostle Paul wrote; “For the love of Christ compels us….” (2 Corinthians 5:14).
To treat people well therefore, love is the core. Whether we rebuke, correct, praise, encourage and care, it should be motivated by love. For instance, Ephesians 4:15 mentioned; “speaking the truth in love,…”. Even when you speak to others, let the love of Christ shine through your speech. Don’t be critical and bitter in your communication; let love rule your lips. Let God’s love be on display at every opportunity you have to interact with people.
Prayer: Father help me to see people the way You see them. Help me genuinely show love and care for people in all walks of life that men may be drawn to You in Jesus’ Name. Amen
